I missed sending out a newsletter in April, but the most exciting thing happened on the 30th of April. With the Estonian street photography group, we planned a day full of shooting and meeting some local photographers in Helsinki.
Helsinki being only a few hours away, it’s funny to think that I have never actually taken the trip to shoot photos there. This time we went for the 7:30 ferry so we would have more hours to shoot.
As we arrived, we decided to take the tram from the Harbor to the furthest destination, Kallio, and start making our way back from there. It was a Sunday, so I kind of expected it to be quiet, but the day got a really slow start as the streets seemed empty.
Our hopes were on the afternoon. The 30th is the May Day or Vappu as it’s called. It marks the beginning of summer as well as the end of the school year. Obviously, it is a huge party, mostly for the students.
Making our way closer to the city center things started to pick up. I started spotting colorful student boilersuits (never seen one before..had to google it :D) and balloons. More and more people showed up outside as the day went on. I wasn’t holding back with the photos either.
Overall, it was a great reminder, that staying out for a long time increases your chances. You can really take the time to figure out the best locations and work the scenes.
After walking around for a while without finding anything interesting you start to give up, but there’s always something around the corner. Funny enough I got my favorite photos on my way back to the ferry. I had already drained the batteries for my camera. I spotted something worth checking out and split from the group for the last detour, luckily I had my backup pocket camera with me…
I’ll be sharing more shots from the trip on Instagram in the coming days.

In the previous newsletter, I shared a written interview with Reuben Radding and it seems it wasn’t enough for me, so here’s another one. This time it comes as a video interview from Paulie B.Don’t worry about style
It was very refreshing to read these quotes about style shared by Austin Kleon.Behind the Scenes | with Matt Stuart on Street Photography
I loved watching this behind-the-scenes photowalk with Matt Stuart. It confirms again what I was reminded on my trip, that to get good shots on the streets, you need to put A LOT of steps in.
